Ep 113 – Four Wines May 2018

It’s time for another four wines. Every couple of months we dedicate an episode to talking about four wines that we’ve enjoyed recently and want to share with our listeners. So let’s get into it…

Joseph Drouhin Mâcon-Villages 2016 – priced around $15. This white wine from Burgundy has aromas of lemon, wet rock, and white flowers. It’s dry with a medium plus acidity and flavors of lemon curd, white peach, white flowers and a hint of grass on the finish. This wine is light, crisp, very fruity – a great warm weather wine to pair with lighter dishes but could be enjoyed on it’s own.

Van Loveren Family Vineyards Neil’s Pick Colombar 2016 – priced around $7. This white wine has intense aromas of tropical fruit – pineapple, passion fruit, guava and red grapefruit. It’s off dry so just a hint of sweetness with medium bodied and medium acidity. The flavor of this wine was not are strong as the aromas but those tropical fruits still shine through in the taste  We loved this wine and ended up sampling quit a bit that night we were tasting it. It was crisp, refreshing, very fruity, great wine if you love those ripe tropical flavors but with balanced acidity. It would be great on a warm day or pair with a strong cheese like a buttermilk blue cheese.

Findleton Estate and Vineyard Kevin’s Vineyard 2014 Pinot Noir – priced around $39. We received this wine for free from the the good people at El Dorado Wine association. This wine has an intense cherry nose with a little earth and white pepper. It’s dry with light tannins and medium plus acidity and light body with flavors of cherry, wet earth and mushroom. This is everything I love about Pinot Noir – fruit driven but the earthy and savory flavors are present. and has a fair amount of acidity but a balanced – enough to pair with or without food.

Freakshow Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 – priced around $20.  I haven’t met a Michael David red wine I didn’t like. This wine has aromas of blackberry, black plum and a hint of vanilla. It’s dry with medium acidity and tannins – striking a really lovely balance in texture with flavors of black fruit and dark chocolate covered espresso beans. This wine is a very juicy and ripe what I would expect from a California Cab but not a flabby wine by any means.
