Weekly Wine Sip – Flora Springs 2012 Napa Valley Cabernet

primary_one_color_logoIn Napa, 2012 was a almost a perfect year for growing grapes. No heat spikes or crazy weather which allowed for an even ripening throughout the season. So if you see anything from Napa Valley 2012 on the shelves, buy it, buy it all.

We came across this gem at a wine seminar on California wine at our local wine and spirits shop. It was the star of that show and we had to take a bottle home. For some reason it sat in our wine cabinet for almost a year before we decided to drink it (what a shame!) but when we finally got around to drinking it; oh boy it was awesome!

The Facts:

  • Region: Napa Valley, California
  • Producer: Flora Springs
  • Grape(s): 95% Cabernet Sauvignon; 3% Malbec; 2% Petite Verdot
  • Year: 2012 (it’s now sold out but you can pick up the 2014 which I’m sure it’s amazing!)
  • When to drink it: drink it now or can be aged through 2020
  • Price: $40

Looks: dark ruby color

Nose: medium intensity nose of blueberries and blackberries with some earthy notes and a touch of cumin.

Taste: This wine is dry with lots of acidity and really soft, lovely tannins. Jammy flavors of blueberries and blackberries dominate in the beginning but taper off to revealing flavors of burnt sugar, chocolate and vanilla on the finish.

Food Pairings: This wine is big and bold with lots of acidity so it needs fatty food! Think steak and lamb but if you’re like me and dig the veggies go for a dish with eggplant and mushrooms.

We love this wine, it was such a treat. This wine is cozy, perfect for fall and winter time with some comfort food, so I recommend you pick up a bottle. Cheers!
