Ep 057 – Four Wines April 2017 Edition

Time for another edition of Four Wines! If you’re new to our show, every couple of months we like to pause and take an episode to talk about wines we love that do not fit into an upcoming episode. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed researching for it!

Wine Recommendations:

Nik Weis St. Urbans-Hof Wiltinger Alte Reben Riesling – priced around $13. This wine has a medium intense nose of rubber (like a whoopee cushion) and honeysuckle. It’s medium sweet with medium plus acidity but lighter on the alcohol (10.5% ABV). Beautiful, fresh fruity flavors of peach, apricot and honey thanks to the Riesling grape and the stainless steel tank fermentation.

Affentaler Spatburgunder – priced around $18. This pinot noir wine has aromas of dirt, cherries, Forrest floor and basil. It’s dry, has medium acidity and light tannins with medium body and alcohol. With flavors of cherry, persimmon with a dried herbal finish, this wine is very fruity, round and smooth.

Whitehaven Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 – priced around $14. Beautiful nose of citrus, esp. grapefruit, dried grass, white flowers, and pineapple. It’s dry, with high acidity and medium body with flavors of grapefruit, pineapple, guava, hint of flowers with a grassy finish. This wine is a delicious representation of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

Orin Swift Machete 2014 – priced around $48. A California red blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah and Grenache that has been aged in french oak for 10 months. Lush and complex nose of dark fruit, wood, dried herbs, fennel seed, earth/forest floor. It’s dry, with medium tannins and acidity and high alcohol (15.5% ABV). This wine is full bodied with flavors of blackberry, cocoa, stewed plum, violets and earl grey tea. A perfect balance between acid and tannins that is perfect for food or just sipping on the couch. Well worth the price!
